TIDEMAND-JOHANNESSEN, Carl Fritjof (1916-1958)
“Fügelfjell i mitnattsol” / Birdcliffs in Midnight Sun
1953
woodcut on paper / 9.5 inches by 11.5 inches
Norwegian-born but educated in Berlin, where he was dismissed from his school for “degenerate” tendencies, Tidemand-Johannessen returned to his homeland and is reputed to have served as a spy during WWII. Arrested in 1941, he spent eighteen months in prison. Known primarily for his woodcut prints—a medium well represented in the collection—this is one of twelve prints published in 1953 as Norge i 12 Originale Fargetresnitt.
This work is on long-term loan from First Lutheran Church.
