The photographer is standing on Gnostic Bridge, looking east over Crispin Creek. Eldred Scott painted that bridge, which had, for her, tragic associations belying the pleasant view seen here. Except for the occasional pop can drifting by, the creek is unchanged today.
Were the photo taken in the other direction, however—much to my chagrin, it wasn’t—we’d glimpse Walden Retreat, private psychological hospital founded in the 1920s by Dr Reinhold Kölb. Walden was a place for restful recuperation. You can see why he chose the site.
